Tourism development in the Sefton Coast area has been boosted through a project to re-route lost or vulnerable sections of the Sefton coastal path to restore a fully intact route to attract both residents and visitors.
An ICEP Mersey Forest Grant has enabled the footpath to take a sustainable course, well away from areas affected by coastal erosion and sand dune movement, instead passing through the Sefton Coast woodlands with attractive vistas into the open dune landscape and the former asparagus fields.
"Formby Nature Reserve is already a valued coastal attraction, and this 4.75km high-quality footpath will make this stretch of coastline more accessible to a wider range of people."
- Sara Wilde, Chair of Mersey Waterfront Regional Park
Excellent access design provides user-friendly surfaces, slopes and signage to ensure ease of movement and enjoyment by visitors of this valued coastal attraction. In addition, access between Victoria Road and Kirklake Road and the car park at Lifeboat Road has been improved to meet BT Countryside for All standards. This will significantly extend the choice of routes for disabled people.
The project complements the activities of the Sefton Coast Woodlands Forest Plan as improving access to the spinal route on the coast brings additional public benefit to the ongoing investment in sustainable woodland management.
- £33,000 ICEP Mersey Forest Grant
