A58 Blackbrook Bypass

ICEP funding for 20,000 trees, over a hectare of habitat brought into management and 1,500 metres of new access routes has helped turn the Blackbrook Bypass into an award winning example of best practice in green construction.

The bypass, opened by then Minister of State for Transport, Dr Stephen Ladyman, in February 2007, will improve access to St.Helens for commercial traffic, assisting the economic regeneration of the town, as well as enriching the wildlife habitat of formerly intensively farmed land and improving access to the Stanley Bank area through the provision of new footpaths.

"In eight years and 1,500 site visits as a Considerate Constructors’ Scheme Monitor, this is by far the best highways project I have ever seen."

- Brian Williams, Considerate Constructors’ Scheme Monitor

The greening of the bypass is a leading example of the St.Helens Town In The Forest Vision to encourage inward investment through an enhanced image and quality of life, and complements a road which will remove 20,000 vehicles per day from Blackbrook village.
