Local Food First

Local Food First is an Objective One funded project set up in June 2003 to develop the local supply chain and sustainable farming systems across Merseyside. The project has been developed by a partnership of North West Fine Foods, Millhouse Training Services, Myerscough College and ICEP (Integrated Countryside and Environment Plan).

The Local Food First project aims to help Merseyside primary producers and food buyers in the following:

  • Gaining access to information, services and funding which can help their individual needs.
  • Providing access to advice and business expertise to help develop new businesses / products and improve existing businesses.
  • Providing financial contributions towards the marketing of local and regional produce.
  • Helping to forge good working partnerships between food buyers and primary and secondary producers.
  • Raising the profile of food and drink producers, sellers and users within Merseyside to consumers.
  • Improving understanding of how local food sourcing can be used as a unique selling point for businesses.

Here are some examples of what has already been achieved by the Local Food First campaign.

  • Provisions of small contribution grants for business expansion for small Merseyside businesses which, produce, sell and promote local or regional produce.
  • Sponsored local produce on menus for events such as the Liverpool Food and Drink Festival.
  • Sponsored regional cheese boards in restaurants during the Liverpool Food and Drink Festival.
  • Designed a recipe leaflet displaying regional dishes using seasonal regional produce.
  • Given business advise and provided potential business opportunities to a number of primary producers looking to expand or diversify their businesses.
  • Helped create new farmers markets and financially assisted Farmers Markets with promotional activities.
  • Formed a partnership with regional health Co-ordinates in the education of food for children.
  • Assisted with funding for consultancy and web design.
