Walks

Walkabout 1 Sefton Coast

Welcome to the Sefton Coast, Merseyside’s stunning face onto the Irish Sea. A string of nationally renowned nature reserves dot this area of sandhills, pinewoods and colourful heathland between Waterloo and Southport. Red squirrels scurry across carpets of pine needles, rare wildflowers dapple the sand dunes, a submerged forest appears at low-tide and old lanes wind to Britain’s first lifeboat station. It’s great, too, for kite-flyers, beachcombers, birdwatchers and those simply in search of glorious beaches on which to top up that tan!

The Wirral coast and countryside is ideal for a break. Miles of seashore and inland walks across heaths, commons and woodland to entice you back, time and again, on your local train or bus.

Walkabout 3 Knowsley & St Helens

There’s a joy in treading the paths of old from town to village by fields of swaying barleycorn. The rich red sandstone walls of Rainhill give way to tilled soils between Cronton, Tarbock Green and Halewood. Church towers and spires provide guiding landmarks as light falls over Runcorn Bridge and the shining waters of the Mersey. These are the sights that make a walk memorable.

Walkabout 4 Green Hearts

At the heart of all the world’s great cities are to be found parks, open spaces, squares and gardens offering citizens a glimpse of nature and wildlife with a foothold in built-up areas. Liverpool is no exception to this, but in addition it enjoys the distinct advantage of having both estuaryside and coastal areas, farmland and unspoilt countryside close by. Such a fortunate combination of resources means that in Merseyside the opportunity to escape from the city into one of these many green areas is very easy.

Rideabout

Cycling is great fun. It is healthy, non polluting and allows a sense of freedom which is lost when in a car. It’s no wonder that more and more people are buying bikes. This booklet describes five short cycle rides which are either traffic-free or on roads where the level of traffic is usually low.
